Persephone:: (per/ci/fo/nee) The goddess of spring and the queen of the underworld (daughter of Zeus and Demeter (goddess of the harvest)). So beautiful that everyone loved her, Hades (god of the underworld) wanting her for himself, abducted her and made her his wife. Demeter wandered the earth, looking for her daughter and she withdrew herself in loneliness, and the earth ceased to be fertile. Knowing this could not continue. Zeus sent Hermes to Hades to make him release her. Hades grudgingly agreed, giving her a pomegranate. When she later ate of it, it bound her to underworld forever and she was forced to return for one-third of every year. When Persephone was in Hades, Demeter refused to let anything grow and winter began… Spring is the celebration of her return.
